You are an experienced professional with a background in complex problem solving with an analytic mind and a strong aptitude for critical thinking. If this is you, consider joining the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario as an Investigator. In this role, you will resolve complaints with respect to the practice, conduct or capacity of physicians and surgeons in Ontario. As part of the investigative process, you will identify, obtain and analyze relevant information and documents, including hospital and office records, reports, statements, and transcripts. You will conduct interviews and take statements from parties and witnesses and explain College policies to all parties as required. Adaptability, flexibility and being comfortable working in a high volume work environment will be invaluable to you in this role.

You will maintain communication with relevant parties and legal counsel throughout the investigative process and assess complaints for resolution when appropriate delivering investigative reports both verbally and in writing to committees and colleagues.


Different investigative teams have different areas of focus. Qualifications may vary across teams however some are required notwithstanding the team. 

  • A university degree in a related field with a minimum of three (3) years of professional experience
  • Strong analytical skills and an aptitude toward critical thinking are crucial
  • Self-directed with ability to manage complex and competing priorities and respond to unique situations as they arise
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including experience with formal report writing
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate difficult, intense and emotional conversations and diffuse tense situations
  • Must be proficient in Windows 7 and Microsoft Office 2010 environment including (Word, WordPerfect, Excel) and have strong keyboarding skills.
  • Familiarity with quality principles and strategies, and working knowledge of RHPA considered an asset.
  • French language skills considered a strong asset.
  • Ability to occasionally travel throughout Ontario.

Areas of focus — at least one area preferred:

  • Regulated Health Professional with certificate in good standing with relevant regulatory body
    • Registered Nurse, Occupational Therapist, MSW, Respiratory Therapist, etc.
    • Focus/expertise in; forensic/ psychiatric care, obstetrics, mental health, ER/ICU, risk management, etc.
  • Legal Expertise with certificate in good standing with the LSUC
    • Administrative law, health law, personal injury, litigation, etc.
  • Investigations
    • Private investigations, corporate investigations, fraud, law enforcement, etc.
