The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) Canada

ISMP Canada is an independent Canadian nonprofit agency established for the collection and analysis of medication error reports and the development of recommendations for the enhancement of patient safety. Like its sister organization, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices in the US, ISMP Canada intends to serve as a national resource for promoting safe medication practices throughout the health care community in Canada.

ISMP Canada is committed to the safe use of medications through improvement in drug distribution (institution and community), naming, packaging, labelling, computer program design and drug delivery system design. The Institute will work collaboratively with healthcare practitioners and institutions, schools, professional organizations, the pharmaceutical industry, and regulatory and government agencies to provide education about adverse drug events and their prevention.

This site is intended to aid primary care providers in their pursuit of optimal care, well-informed patients and healthy lifestyles. Information is gleaned from reputable sources, referenced where possible, taken from lectures and workshops, peer reviewed articles, bulletins and key texts. New approaches to medical problems are referenced with supporting studies and further reading is often suggested on general medical issues.

Bandolier (UK)

Bandolier is a user-friendly, evidence based Web resource. The Web site provides concise, evidence based reviews of current medical care issues. The home page offers access to 36 topic areas (e.g., asthma; ear, nose and throat [ENT]; and pain). The intended audience appears to be general practitioners, and many of the topics are relevant to primary care. This monthly newsletter is available free on the Internet at the website above. The contents are downloadable as portable document files (PDFs).

BestBETs (UK)

BETs were developed in the Emergency Department of Manchester Royal Infirmary, UK, to provide rapid evidence-based answers to real-life clinical questions, using a systematic approach to reviewing the literature. BETs take into account the shortcomings of much current evidence, allowing physicians to make the best of what there is. Although BETs initially had an emergency medicine focus, there are a significant number of BETs covering cardiothoracics, nursing, primary care and paediatrics.

National Guideline Clearinghouse (US)

The National Guideline Clearinghouse™ (NGC) is a comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related documents produced by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (formerly the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research [AHCPR]), in partnership with the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Association of Health Plans.

The NGC mission is to provide physicians, nurses, and other health professionals, health care providers, health plans, integrated delivery systems, purchasers and others an accessible mechanism for obtaining objective, detailed information on clinical practice guidelines and to further their dissemination, implementation and use.
