Clinical Supervisor

Bring your Skills to the Table

Position: Clinical Supervisor

The College is seeking members who are practising physicians to become clinical supervisors.

Clinical supervisors are individuals who inspect a physician’s practice at regularly prescribed intervals set by the College to ensure that the physician is meeting the expected standard of care and that patient safety is not being compromised. The clinical supervisor identifies physician enhancement opportunities to the supervised physicians. S/he may also assist physicians in learning about community resources to help meet patient needs. The College uses clinical supervisors for a number of programs:

  • In the Quality Assurance program: When physicians have undergone assessment and the assessment reveals areas for clinical improvement.
  • In the Registration program: There are several pathways to registration for physicians who do not have the standard qualifications to become registered in Ontario. Such physicians are given a restricted certificate to practise medicine, and the restriction usually stipulates that the physician must have a clinical supervisor.
  • In the Investigations and Resolutions program: Where an investigation has revealed areas for clinical improvement.

Requirements

Supervisors meet with the physician on a regular basis to review records with the specific purpose of ensuring the physician is not putting patients at risk of harm. In some cases, observing the physician with patients and interviewing colleagues and co-workers may be included in the role. There is a significant educational opportunity within this records review in that the supervisor and the physician can discuss current evidence-based approaches to the practice of medicine, current issues in the scope of practice, and further remediation work that can be done by the physician. The amount of supervision is determined by the program or Committee (see the Guidelines for College-Directed Supervision).

The supervisor submits regular supervision reports to the College.
