Dr. Jason Malinowski: Barry’s Bay Family Physician Receives CPSO Council Award

On Friday, September 7, 2018, the Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario will present the Council Award to Dr. Jason Malinowski of Barry’s Bay, Ontario.

Dr. Malinowski is a passionate advocate for rural medicine. He has distinguished himself as a clinical leader who has developed programs and systems that have contributed to the continuous improvement of his region’s integrated health system.

“Dr. Malinowski is the consummate rural physician,” says CPSO President, Dr. Steven Bodley. “His dedication, passion and commitment to ensuring his patients and community have access to excellent health care make him the picture of the ideal physician. The CPSO is proud to honour him with this award.”

In addition to his private medical practice, Dr. Malinowski is the Chief of Staff at the St. Francis Memorial Hospital and sits on numerous hospital and community health committees. As the physician advisor on the municipal Physician Recruitment and Retention Committee he has helped shape strategies to attract new physicians to the region. He co-led the creation of the Madawaska Valley Hospice and Palliative Care Program, and now serves as the program medical director and has the same role at the Valley Manor Long-Term Care Home. Dr. Malinowski also established the Grand Rounds Program at St. Francis Memorial which brings experts to Barry’s Bay in an effort to assist physicians and allied health care professionals stay current with medical best practices.

Dr. Malinowski is a highly regarded assistant professor of medicine at Queen’s University and uses this role to expose younger physicians to careers in rural medicine. His skills and dedication to teaching have been recognized numerous times including by being named Community Teacher of the Year by the Ontario College of Family Physicians and Distinguished Preceptor two years in a row.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is the licensing and regulatory body governing the practice of medicine in Ontario. The College’s Council Award is presented four times a year to physicians who have demonstrated excellence in the eight physician roles identified as the essential qualities needed to practise modern medicine.
