Dr. Sarah Reid: Ottawa leader in pediatric emergency medicine receives CPSO Council Award

Today, the Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario presented the Council Award to Dr. Sarah Reid in recognition of her work to ensure children across Canada receive evidence-based, high quality pediatric emergency care.

Dr. Reid is a pediatrician in the emergency department at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). She is also the medical lead for CHEO’s Emergency Department Outreach Program, and an assistant professor in pediatrics and emergency medicine at the University of Ottawa. 

As the founding medical lead for CHEO’s Emergency Department Outreach Program, Dr. Reid has been at the forefront of the creation and implementation of a program that provides outreach education to community hospitals within the Champlain and South East LHINs. The core of the program is a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses and a pharmacist who work with community hospitals to reduce variations in care by providing resources, care standards, and training programs specific to the learning needs of the health professionals in individual emergency departments.

Dr. Reid has translated her work at CHEO to the national level where she serves as the Ontario lead for the TREKK – the Translating Emergency Knowledge for Kids network, a nationwide collaboration of pediatric academic centres, community emergency departments, researchers and clinicians to disseminate the best evidenced-based pediatric emergency care standards across the country. 

“Dr. Reid’s work and dedication to improving the quality of acute care for children throughout Canada is exemplary,” says CPSO President, Dr. Steven Bodley. “Her efforts to ensure children who find themselves in the emergency room get the same high quality, consistency of care whether in a tertiary care centre or a community hospital benefits us all.“

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is the licensing and regulatory body governing the practice of medicine in Ontario. The Council Award is presented four times a year to physicians who have demonstrated excellence in the eight physician roles identified as the essential qualities needed to practise modern medicine.
