In light of recently documented cases of the monkeypox virus infection in several countries, including Canada, the Chief Medical Officer of Health is urging physicians and other health practitioners to be alert for patients with symptoms that are consistent with monkeypox virus infection, especially if they have had travel or contact with a known case. Symptoms include fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes and lethargy, followed by the development of a rash.

The Chief Medical Officer of Health has also issued an Order under section 77.6 of the Health Protection and Promotion Act requiring all physicians to report any individual who meets the case definition of monkeypox virus to Public Health Ontario.

Physicians can find additional resources and infection prevention and control recommendations on the Public Health Ontario and the Public Health Agency of Canada websites below.
