Language Proficiency

CPSO may consider the language proficiency of an applicant for postgraduate education through a variety of means. Applicants have the option of submitting proof of proficiency with test scores, in accordance with Section 3 of O. Reg. 508/22 under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991.

The College accepts the following English language testing scores, in line with those set out in the FMRAC Model Standards for Medical Registration in Canada:

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) academic version within the last 24 months at the time of application, and achieved a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components in the same sitting; or
  • Occupational English Test - Medicine (OET-Medicine) within the last 24 months at the time of application, with a minimum grade of B in each of the four subsets in the same sitting; or
  • Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program-General (CELPIP-General) Test within the last 24 months at the time of application, with a minimum score of 9 in each of the four skills in the same sitting.

The College accepts the following French language testing scores:

  • Test d’évaluation de français pour le Canada (TEF Canada)
    • Compréhension écrite (reading) — 233/300 points
    • Compréhension orale (listening) — 280/360 points
    • Expression écrite (writing) — 349/450 points
    • Expression orale (speaking) — 349/450 points
  • Test de connaissance du français pour le Canada (TCF Canada)
    • Compréhension écrite (reading) — 499 points
    • Compréhension orale (listening) — 503 points
    • Expression écrite (writing) — 12 points
    • Expression orale (speaking) — 12 points
