Re-entering Clinical Practice

Print page icon

Physicians must report to the College when they wish to re-enter clinical practice after an absence of two or more consecutive years. Clinical practice includes the assessment and treatment of patients. Physicians may re-enter practice into the clinical area in which they were previously engaged or into a clinical area in which they have not previously practised. Registration Committee review may be required for physicians who have returned to practice on a reduced schedule in the preceding two years.

Re-entering Practice Process

The re-entering practice process begins with an application, which is then reviewed by a Changing Scope of Practice and Re-entering Practice Coordinator to assess your needs.

Following the completion of the assessment of your application, you will receive a finalized Individualized Education Plan (IEP), if applicable, and a Clinical Supervision Agreement. Clinical Supervision reports are to be submitted as outlined in your signed agreement.

If required, the assessment of your practice will be facilitated by an Assessment Coordinator.

While the re-entering practice process generally involves training, supervision and assessment, all components may not apply in every case.

As with all requests for re-entering clinical practice, in arriving at a decision, the CPSO will review each physician's applications and circumstances on an individual basis.
