CPSO is pleased to launch its new provisional registration class for physicians following considerable support from registrants and the Ontario government. This change aligns with CPSO’s commitment to modernizing registration practices and improving transparency for physicians, the public, and system partners. The provisional class takes effect on January 1, 2026.

A key benefit of the provisional class is that it is distinct from the restricted class:

  • The provisional class will include physicians whose certificates of registration have only limitations related to registration pathways (e.g. scope of practice limitations).
  • The restricted class will only include physicians whose certificates of registration have limitations relating to practice concerns or disciplinary action.

Overall, the provisional class was created to ensure physicians’ certificates of registration more accurately convey their practice and professional standing.
