Physicians required to report change of scope

At its meeting in June 2007, Council of the College announced its intent to require physicians to report a change in their scope of practice or re-entry to practice.

College policies developed in 2000 relied on physicians to come forward of their own volition if they wished to change their scope of practice or re-enter practice. These policies were revised in 2008 to require physicians to report such changes to the College. See College policy, Ensuring Competence: Changing Scope of Practice and/or Re-entering Practice.

The consequence of voluntary self-reporting was that some physicians did report and undergo the training, supervision and assessment required by the policies, while others did not.

The revised policies are intended to ensure that a physician has the skills, training and experience necessary to practise in the area in which the physician chooses to practise.
