The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) is committed to serving the people of Ontario through effective regulation of physicians and physician assistants (“Registrants”). The CPSO Board of Directors (Board) is responsible for governing the affairs of CPSO in fulfilling its duty to serve in the public interest.

Notice of Election – Application Period Closed

Thank you to all those who submitted applications for the 2026 Board Elections. The deadline to submit was 4:00 PM Friday, October 24, 2025. The application period is now closed.

Vote

Voting is conducted confidentially online. When voting opens, eligible Registrants will receive an email with instructions from a third-party elections company. You are eligible to vote in the CPSO Board Election if:

  • Your business address is in Ontario, or
  • You currently reside in Ontario

By voting, you help ensure your voice is heard and CPSO’s Board reflects a broad range of perspectives from the profession.

Election Period

Online voting to elect six Directors to the Board of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario opens at 7 a.m. on February 17, 2026, and closes at 4 p.m. on March 10, 2026.

Ballots will be sent to eligible voters by BigPulse on February 17, 2026. Please check your spam folder if the email is not in your inbox.

CPSO Board and Election FAQ

The FAQs below answer common questions about the role of the CPSO Board of Directors, the election process, and how Registrants can participate as applicants or voters.

  • What is the role of the Board of Directors at CPSO?

    The Board oversees CPSO’s governance, strategic planning, and policy development. The Directors of the Board consist of elected Registrants (Physicians and Physician Assistants), Public Appointees, and Appointed Academic Registrants from Ontario’s medical schools. Its primary responsibility is to ensure that CPSO fulfills its mandate of serving in the public interest and meeting CPSO’s strategic priorities and legislative obligations.

    Why should you run for Election to CPSO’s Board?

    Serving on the CPSO Board provides an opportunity to oversee the governance structure and make meaningful contributions that support the public interest. Directors are expected to actively participate in discussions, attend meetings, and oversee CPSO’s strategic direction.

    What is a Board Profile, and how is it used?

    The CPSO Board Profile outlines the desired behavioural competencies, skills and experiences, and diversity attributes required for the CPSO's Board as a whole to function effectively.

    The Board Profile may be revised periodically to adapt to the evolving needs and priorities of CPSO.

  • What is the Election model?

    CPSO’s Election model is competency-based and overseen by the Governance and Nominating Committee (GNC).

    The GNC conducts a skills gap analysis annually, comparing the current Board composition to the Board Profile. Then, the GNC determines the attributes of the Board Profile that are to be targeted in the upcoming election.

    Under this model, Registrants may apply to be considered for the Slate of Nominees and the GNC will review and determine the Slate of Nominees to put forward for Election.

  • Q: When is the voting period?

    The voting period begins on February 17, 2026, at 7 a.m. and ends on March 10, 2026, at 4 p.m.

    Q: Who is eligible to vote? 

    A: You are eligible to vote if you meet the criteria as set out in the CPSO By-laws and 45 days before the election:

    • Your business address is in Ontario, or
    • If you are not currently practising, you reside in Ontario.

    Q: How many votes can I cast? 

    A: You may cast as many votes as there are Board positions to be filled, but you can only vote once for each nominee. For the 2026 Election, there are six positions available. You may cast up to six votes, one for each position, however, you cannot vote more than once for the same nominee. You may vote for both Physician Registrant and Physician Assistant Registrant nominees

    Q: How do I receive my ballot? 

    A: If you’re an eligible voter, you will receive secure electronic access to a ballot along with voting instructions via email. You will also receive voting reminders by email, which will stop once you have submitted your ballot or when the election period ends.
