What is Ontario’s Automatic Recognition legislation and who is eligible?
Effective January 1, 2026, this route allows qualified physicians holding an equivalent licence in another Canadian jurisdiction to have their licence “automatically” recognized in Ontario. Applicants will have their applications assessed within two business days.
Automatic recognition is the new process for labour mobility applicants entering Ontario under the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA), which enables unrestricted mobility between provinces for eligible candidates licensed to practise medicine in Canada. The CFTA establishes national registration standards for licensure, eliminating inter-jurisdictional differences in registration qualifications while ensuring applicants across Canada meet acceptable minimum standards.
To be eligible for automatic recognition, applicants must complete a self-screening questionnaire and an application confirming that they meet required criteria, including being of good character and in good standing in the Canadian jurisdiction where they already hold licensure.
Only those holding an equivalent out-of-province certificate will qualify. If you have any questions about eligibility, CPSO advisors are available to discuss by email at [email protected] or by phone at 1-800-268-7096 ext. 617.
How long will it take an application to be assessed under Automatic Recognition?
Following the submission of all required application materials, the College will assess the application and either register the applicant or refer them to the Registration Committee within two business days.
What fees are associated with the Automatic Recogniton route?
Physicians eligible for automatic recognition are not required to pay an application fee but are required to pay the annual registration fee as part of their application.
Do I have to maintain my licence from my previous jurisdiction, or other jurisdiction where I hold a licence?
No. Physicians registered under the Automatic Recognition route are not required to maintain their licences in other jurisdictions. However, physicians must hold licensure in the jurisdictions where they practise medicine.
Can I find the profile of a physicians practising under the Automatic Recognition route on the CPSO Physician Register?
Yes. Physicians registered through Automatic Recognition are registrants of the College and will have a profile listed on the Register.
