Changing Scope of Practice

Print page icon

Prior to proceeding with a change in scope of practice, physicians must engage with CPSO to develop a plan that includes appropriate education, training, and experience to competently provide scope-related care. CPSO approval for a change of scope must be confirmed prior to physicians practicing independently.

Change in Scope of Practice Process

The change in scope of practice process begins with an application, which is then reviewed by a Changing Scope of Practice and Re-entering Practice Coordinator to assess your needs.

Following the completion of the assessment of your application, you will receive a finalized Individualized Education Plan (IEP), if applicable, and a Clinical Supervision Agreement. Clinical Supervision reports are to be submitted as outlined in your signed agreement.

If required, the assessment of your practice will be facilitated by an Assessment Coordinator.

While the change in scope of practice process generally involves training, supervision and assessment, all components may not apply in every case.

As with all requests for change in scope, in arriving at a decision, the CPSO will review each physician's applications and circumstances on an individual basis.
