Renewal of Postgraduate Education Certificate of Registration
All postgraduate medical trainees require valid CPSO certification to practice or train in Ontario.
All postgraduate medical trainees require a valid CPSO certificate of registration to practice or train in Ontario.
On April 8, 2024, CPSO begins its process for renewing Postgraduate Education (PGE) certificates for training appointments starting on or after July 1, 2024.
You must complete your application for PGE renewal in the Portal by logging in and selecting the “Membership Renewal” tile from the portal dashboard.
Your PGE certificate expires on the last day of your current postgraduate training appointment at your medical school or on your certificate expiry date, whichever comes first. If your training appointment is renewed, you are required to apply to renew your certificate before it starts. If you do not complete your application to renew your PGE certificate by the expiry date, your certificate will expire and you must cease all medical practice and training in Ontario until you apply for and are issued a new certificate of registration.
Please send any questions via the Portal message centre. Alternatively, you can contact the Registration & Membership Services Department at 416-967-2625.
We require the following to renew your PGE certificate of registration:
- Signed Letter of Appointment submitted to CPSO by your PGME Office.
- Completed online PGE renewal application and payment of CPSO's registration fee.
Note: your online renewal will only become available once CPSO receives your Letter of Appointment from your PGME office. A portal message will be sent to you with instructions for renewal, at which point you can log in to the Portal and click the “Membership Renewal” tile to complete your renewal. - Statement of Objectives (if you are entering a new Clinical Fellowship). A copy of your Statement of Objectives can be emailed to [email protected].
You must complete the renewal application in the Portal and submit payment prior to your certificate expiry date to ensure timely renewal. If your certificate expires, you will no longer be eligible for renewal and will have to submit a new application.
You can check the status of your renewal by viewing your profile in the Doctor Search database on the CPSO website, or by verifying your certificate expiry date on the Registration section of your “Profile” in the Portal. If your certificate expiry date is unchanged, your certificate was not renewed.
PGE Registration Renewal Fee
All PGE certificate renewals require payment of a pro-rated annual registration fee, which is calculated based on the duration of your training appointment. The fee cannot be refunded once paid.
Final-Year Residents Starting Independent Practice
If your training is ending or you’re continuing subspecialty training and you intend to start independent practice, you need to apply for an Independent Practice (IP) certificate. Please send a message via the Portal for application instructions.
Note: if your IP certificate is not issued in time for your training appointment, you must either renew your PGE certificate or postpone your appointment start date. However, the PGE registration fee cannot be refunded once paid.
